Our new What's On guide for 2023

There’s something to help your body and your mind in Active Communities’ new programme of classes for 2023.

We are launching our new timetable of classes this month with something for all ages and interests. There are daytime and evening events for young and old and all activity levels. All classes start back the week beginning Monday, January 16 although individual Jogging Buddies groups may vary. Some classes are free thanks to funding while others are paid for.

Cheryl Thomas, Programmes Development Manager for Active Communities, said: "We are delighted to launch our new programme of classes for 2023. We are continuing with our popular Jogging Buddies and Walking Buddies groups and bringing back Singing Buddies which was a real hit before.

"We're also introducing some new groups including Trigger Point Pilates on a Wednesday from 6pm and groups for young people. Our Games and Grub club is for pupils in P5-P7 to come and get some hot food and enjoy some games. Parents are welcome too. This has been made possible thanks to funding from Renfrewshire Council's Winter Connections Programme.

"Some of our classes are pay-as-you-go and are subsidised thanks to external funders and our own fundraising. Many are free so come along and give it a go! And if you enjoy what you've done, bring a friend along next time!"

New to Active Communities this year is a free, four-week course designed to help people who are grieving. Seasons for Growth is an educational programme that uses imagery of the seasons to illustrate the experience of grief. For more information on Seasons for Growth, click here.

The course, which will take place at Station Seven, is for anyone living with the effects of change and loss which can include grieving for the loss of someone or something you love, changing friendships, family separation, moving to a new place, the impact of illness or family/work/life changes.

Through the course, people learn that they are not alone. It's the impact of the change, not the event itself, that Seasons for Growth focuses on. It does not provide counselling or therapy. The course will run from Friday, January 20 from 12noon till 2pm at Station Seven, 7 Quarry Street, Johnstone. Anyone interested in taking part can email cheryl@activecommunities.co.uk

Our new timetable includes the long-running and popular groups, Jogging Buddies (£3) and Walking Buddies (FREE). Our Ralston Jogging Buddies group is also starting the popular Couch to 5k programme from Wednesday, January 11.

This nine-week course aims to get people from running and walking one minute at a time to running for 30 minutes. All our Jogging Buddies classes are led by qualified leaders and you will run as part of a sociable, supportive group so why not give running a go in 2023?

The Musical Tots class (FREE/£5) will continue on a Monday morning where you can bring your wee ones along for some active singing and music.

We’re also bringing back our popular Singing Buddies group (DONATION) which will be led by qualified singer Karen, from our partners at Brick Lane Music Academy CIC. It will run on a Monday from 1.30pm till 3pm.

On Monday mornings we’re also starting a new Mindful Activities class (FREE) with a variety of activities to stimulate your mind and boost your mental health.

On Tuesday afternoons, we’re launching Games and Grub (FREE) , an after-school club for children in P5 to P7 who are welcome to come along and receive some hot food and play some games. Parents are welcome too. This has been funded thanks to Renfrewshire Council’s Winter Connections Programme.

New to Wednesdays is our Hearty Lives Homework Café (FREE) for secondary school-age children. We’ll be opening up Station Seven and serving hot drinks and light snacks for older children who want to come somewhere warm and safe and hang out on their own or with friends.

Our new Trigger Point Pilates (£4) class is on a Wednesday evening from 6pm till 6.45pm. It uses equipment including foam rollers and spiky massage balls as part of a range of exercises to alleviate aches and pains and muscle tightness. It will be run by popular local instructor, Alexis Holmes

On Thursdays, the popular Women’s Break-xercise class (FREE) will continue. Ladies are welcome to come along and join in the fitness session which has an upper-body focus then enjoy a light breakfast afterwards. The breakfast is also available to those who can’t make the class. There will also be a Holistic Self Care class (FREE) at 10.30am with activities including hand massage and essential oils.

Our Create Club Youth Drop In (FREE) is on a Thursday evening from 4pm till 6pm in partnership with Create Paisley and is for young people in S1 and above.

Fridays will continue with our popular Friday Feel Good Drop In (FREE) from 10am till 12noon alongside the Crochet Group from 10.30am till 12.
