Active Communities welcomes new Chief Executive

Active Communities is delighted to announce the appointment of Sarah Hand as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Sarah brings over two decades of experience working in health, community development and the voluntary sector, including senior leadership roles in both the NHS and international charities. Most recently she served as Chief Executive of Avert, a UK-based, internationally digital health organisation focused on HIV and sexual health, where she led strategy, partnerships and organisational development over an eleven-year period.

Throughout her career, Sarah has worked to support communities experiencing disadvantage and inequality, helping organisations strengthen their impact through collaboration, evidence-led approaches, community engagement and strong partnerships. Her experience spans frontline health services, community-based programmes, behaviour change communication and strategic leadership across the voluntary sector.

Active Communities, based at Station Seven in Johnstone, delivers a wide range of programmes that support health, wellbeing and social connection across Renfrewshire - from family and early years support to community meals, food support, physical activity and social groups.

Speaking about her appointment, Sarah said:

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Active Communities. I have been hugely impressed by the dedication of the staff and volunteers and by the warmth and energy of the community here at Station Seven.

Active Communities plays a vital role in supporting people across Renfrewshire to improve their health, wellbeing, aspirations and sense of connection. I’m excited to work alongside the team, our partners and the wider community to build on the organisation’s strong foundations and continue to grow its impact.”

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Susie Paterson said:

“We are thrilled to welcome Sarah as our new CEO. She brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to tackling inequality and supporting communities to thrive. We look forward to working with her as Active Communities continues to grow and strengthen its work across Renfrewshire.”

Sarah has recently returned to Scotland after many years working in the international voluntary sector and is looking forward to contributing her experience locally.
